Have you heard the recent furore about the ‘migraine pose’? Where you pose with one hand up to your head, pushing the skin above the eyebrow up as if you have a splitting headache. It gives an instant face lift and frames the face, making it the A-listers go-to pose for social media snaps.
The pose itself is super flattering, but the name has been called out for misrepresenting the reality of suffering from migraines. Migraines are not just headaches, and sufferers don’t tend to sit around looking glam with their hands resting on their heads.
A migraine can cause severe throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation, usually on just one side of the head. It’s often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine attacks can cause significant pain for hours to days and can be so severe that the pain is disabling.
In response to the trend, many of those who experience migraines have been sharing their own versions of #migrainepose photos on Instagram, showing the reality of how migraines affect them. Medications can help prevent some migraines and make them less painful.
Talk to your doctor about different migraine treatment options if you can’t find relief. Or, perhaps speak to your dentist. Your migraines may be the result of dental-related issues such as bruxism (teeth clenching / grinding). If you are bruxing at night, you may not even be aware of the problem. If this is the case, speak to your dentist about the F.O.S. solution.
